Get ready for the 2015 GNSI Conference!

Castle at ArcadiaArcadia is a small, private comprehensive university located on 76 acres in “suburban Philadelphia” -- that is, it is one mile from the northern city limit and 8 miles from “Center City” Philadelphia. Though it is best known for being a pioneer in international education, Arcadia is also distinguished by having a major in scientific illustration.

Horace Trumbauer, who also designed the Philadelphia Museum of Art, was the architect for the university’s signature building, “the Castle”. Trumbauer drew inspiration for his design from Alnwick Castle in England, where scenes for the first two Harry Potter movies were filmed. It is not surprising that some Arcadia students occasionally feel that they are studying at Hogwarts.

Arcadia is located in the town of Glenside, PA – well within walking distance from campus. Glenside is a typical “small town U.S.A.” with a number of ethnic restaurants as well as specialty shops. The annual 4th of July parade has been described as the largest Independence Day parade in the greater Philadelphia area. The Glenside train station, which connects with both the Amtrak station in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia International Airport, is a 15-minute walk from campus.

When the delights of Glenside begin to pale, the big city of Philadelphia can offer visitors a wide variety of opportunities (and a lot more than cream cheese and cheesesteaks). Everyone knows about the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, but have you heard of Elfreth’s Alley – America’s oldest continuously inhabited residential street? It’s a little bit of the 18th century hiding in the 21st. Other attractions include the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and Center City museums such as the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Mütter Museum and the Philadelphia Zoo. Amish country is about an hour away, as is the NJ Pine Barrens.

Arcadia University CommonsIn short, the GNSI 2015 meeting in Glenside, PA promises something for everyone. Stay tuned for details!
