>2013 GNSI Conference Logo by Dick Rauh

Our 2013 Conference will be held at the College of the Atlantic, a small college occupying 35 acres and located on the ocean on Mount Desert Island in the seaside town of Bar Harbor. The college is renowned for its programs in environmental and marine studies. It is one of few colleges dedicated to the teaching of natural history, and also offers programs in art, design, poetry and writing, history, and politics, etc.

2013 conference Bar Harbor, MEBar Harbor is nestled on the east side of Mount Desert Island, surrounded by Acadia National Park, and has welcomed visitors for over a hundred years. There is a wide variety of activities for visitors: over 50 square miles of beautiful terrain for hiking, climbing and enjoying the stunning views; or go whale watching, biking the national park, camping, hiking, and canoeing. Local restaurants offer wonderful eating experiences, whether you’re in the mood for lobster, seafood, pasta, homemade desserts, breakfast or any other favorites.

If you are planning ahead for travel, Bar Harbor is easily accessible by car, 256 miles from Boston. Air travel is serviced by the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, just 12 miles from the village. Bangor International Airport is only 50 miles away.

We encourage members interested in presenting or teaching a workshop to please contact Suzanne Wegener for traditional presentations/workshops and Ikumi Kayama for digital presentations/ workshops. Information for submissions is forthcoming. Please consider contributing to the conference by sharing an experience or your expertise in a technique.

2013 Conference site; photo by Amy GagnonOur two previous conferences in Bar Harbor have been wonderful experiences; the campus and its personnel are a delight and the area is rich with resources. This year we are planning exciting new programs, and several features of the campus - particularly the dorms - have been expanded and modernized. As always, the three-day core conference will offer presentations on a variety of natural history topics, as well as favorite events such as our members’ exhibition, portfolio sharing, auction, and banquet. After the core conference, ½-day to 2-day workshops and field trips will be offered.

This juried show will be exhibited at the Dorr Museum, on the campus of the College Of The Atlantic, Bar Harbor, ME, site of the 2013 GNSI Annual Conference.

Members are invited to submit up to two entries; exhibit space is limited. Works up to 30” wide (framed) are preferred. There is limited space available for small 3D works (no large than 10” tall), which will be displayed in glass cases.

NEW this year: online entry! You may submit your entries and forms directly online at the same URL. You may also email or mail your entries to exhibit coordinator, Jamie Guth.

Annual Members Exhibit will be held at the Dorr Museum at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. This will be a juried exhibit, open July 7 - August 24.

Please note: Wall space for this exhibit is very limited and will restrict the number of pieces we can display; additional space may be available, but we won’t know for sure until later in the spring. GNSI 2013 Auction

March 25, 2013

2013 auctionI'm Erin Hunter, and I'll be the auction coordinator for the 2013 conference in Bar Harbor, Maine. I'm looking forward to organizing this important aspect of our conference, which helps raise money for our both our Education and General Funds. I'll be sending out reminders as we get closer to the conference, but in the meantime, let me fill you in on some details.

>Donate your items to the GNSI auction!

As those of you who have attended conferences know, the auction is a not only a fundraiser for GNSI but also a really fun part of the conference. Donations are collected from members, art supply stores, natural history museums and the like, and they are displayed at the conference for members to bid on at a silent auction. Large ticket items, such as original John Cody watercolor paintings or prints, are auctioned off at a live auction, presided over this year by our own Dave Clarke. Refreshments are available to fortify you as you compete with fellow GNSI members for these much-coveted prizes!

Funds generated by the conference auction are currently split evenly between our Education Fund and the General Fund and are an important source of income for GNSI. I encourage you to donate to the auction, whether your contribution is small (a pencil set) or large (a framed, original painting). Here are a few suggestions:

  • Notecards, mugs, bags, or other items featuring your illustrations/designs
  • Original artwork
  • Handmade, decorative or other art papers
  • Books you've illustrated
  • Field sketching kits
  • Natural history items (e.g. pinned, boxed insects or herbarium specimens)
  • Magazine subscriptions
  • Oddball, fun items are always welcome!

If you have an item in mind but aren't sure whether it will work for the auction, please feel free to email me. I'll have more details soon about where to send items if you plan to ship them before the conference.

I look forward to seeing you all in Bar Harbor!

Sincerely,

Erin Hunter
GNSI Auction Coordinator

The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators 2013 Conference Committee is excited to welcome you to Bar Harbor, Maine! We offer an outstanding lineup of workshops and presentations, events, and field trips, so make plans to share and learn with illustrators from far and wide. It will be an outstanding week of fun, camaraderie, and networking.

There are still a few spaces available for presenters to sign up. Give one of the Coordinators a shout to present your topic.

The site will continue to add more details over the next week or two, but if you have any questions now, send us a message with the contact form.
