Join us for the GNSI's 2023 Visual SciComm Conference!
August 11-13, 2023
This year’s Visual SciComm Conference “Shifting Landscapes: What’s Next for Scientific Illustration?” addresses the idea that we're transitioning as a field on several fronts. With misinformation broadly on the rise—along with recent advances in A.I.—the field of science illustration feels as though it's at a crux point. We'll learn from leaders in the field about how to become more effective, collaborative, and nimble science communicators.
We’ll hear from:
- Adolfo Arranz—a Spanish graphic artist based in Hong Kong. Field sketching features prominently in his personal work. The practice has influenced his award-winning professional work as a visual journalist for Reuters, South China Morning Post, El Mundo and others. Recent projects for Reuters—on topics including bats and the science of sleep—merge expressive illustration with the latest trends in digital storytelling.
- Angela Morelli—the CEO and co-founder of Norway-based InfoDesignLab, a studio that works with scientists "to turn complex data into unique visualizations, meaningful narratives, and compelling messages." InfoDesignLab specializes in co-design, particularly in the service of building visual tools that aid decision-making. Clients include the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the European Environment Agency, and the World Meteorological Organization.
- Nirupa Rao, a botanical illustrator and National Geographic Young Explorer based in Bangalore, India. Her work—inspired by field visits and guided by close-collaborations with scientists—is beautifully displayed in books including Hidden Kingdom—Fantastical Plants of the Western Ghats and Pillars of Life—Magnificent Trees of the Western Ghats.
- Travis Vermilye, a Colorado-based digital and mixed media artist with a background in medical illustration and animation. His abstract digital imagery and animations—many rooted in microscopic organic forms including lichen, algae, fungi, and slime molds—evoke a sense of calm.
- computer scientist Ben Zhao on how A.I. image generation works and his innovative project Glaze, designed to help artists protect their work from being used in AI generative art without their consent.
…and more!
PLUS, get ready for a series of lightning round talks featuring inspiring projects, people, techniques, and thoughts ranging from producing images of the cosmos with JWST data, to using illustration to inspire action to mitigate against climate change.
Of course we’re also offering exciting opportunities for you to share your work and connect with the global scicomm community, including:
- Social media portfolio sharing on Facebook and Twitter
- The 55th Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition
- Evening social & networking events
Registration opens July 11 - check back here for details!
