Location:
Appledore Island, Maine
Dates:
July 12-19, 2010
About:
We are offering a workshop option in Biological Illustration- the famous one-week two-credit course taught by Ober, Garrison, and Gibson.
Everywhere you turn these days—on TV and the web, as well as in journals, books, and posters—you see examples of beautiful and detailed scientific illustrations. The best of these represent a powerful combination of classic illustration techniques and good science. Whether you are a student, an artist or a scientist, this course will provide training in those techniques and teach you how to rigorously apply them in a scientific context. Four specific techniques will be covered: pen and ink, carbon dust, watercolor, and colored pencil. You will also learn the digital corrolaries of those techniques using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, and how to optimally prepare scientific illustrations for today’s complex digital workflows. Along the way you will benefit from general discussions on color, design, printing processes, and the business of scientific publishing.
This course takes place at a vibrant marine field station on Appledore Island off the coast of Maine. It is one of many courses and activities running concurrently which places the Biological Illustration students in the middle of a bustling scientific community. In any given year illustration students might participate in a whale watch, scour the island’s intertidal zone for interesting specimens, visit a nearby harbor seal colony, follow the progress of a tern restoration project or even collaborate with other students on the island to provide illustrations for their research.
Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) will offer more than 20 college-credit courses at our facility on world famous Appledore Island, Maine, where art and illustration happen side-by-side with science. We feature small class sizes and an experiential learning environment where everyone learns by first-hand observation. Appledore has been a haven for artists since the 19th century, including impressionist Childe Hassam, and we work to continue this rich tradition.
Fee:
$2,506 (includes room, board and tuition) Non-credit workshop option available for those not seeking credit; 5-day minimum ($950.00 for 5 days)
