  • Keynote address - exciting speakers relate whatÍs happening in our field.
  • Program sessions - frequently include topics of business, legal, technique themes.
  • Members art exhibit/reception - see the best of peersÍ work in this juried show.
  • Business meeting - hear Board reports, and participate in Guild business.
  • Banquet - experience cuisine generally in tune with local specialties.
  • Auction - bid on artwork, publications, materials (and more) to help the Guild financially.
  • Workshops - learn about electronic and traditional (and sometimes off-beat) media.
  • Field trips - go to preserves, parks, museums, zoos, arboretums, etc.

GNSI Summer Workshop

Each year the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators sponsors a summer workshop, an intensive one or two week course in which the methods and materials used in natural science illustration are taught. Although open to individuals of all levels of experience, one of the primary goals of the workshop is to refine and expand the skills participants have previously acquired in art and science courses and to direct them toward the production of illustrations for publication. Professional illustrators, all specialists in particular fields, teach, demonstrate and critique a variety of techniques and subjects. The workshop is moved to different regions of the United States on an irregular basis. Class size varies, but is usually limited to 12 to 25 participants. Acceptance is based on the merit of 15-20 pieces, submitted as a slide portfolio, usually due around April 1st of each year. Evenings frequently can include guest lectures, drawing on your own, or socializing and relaxing. Skills taught at the 1996 workshop included:

  • Excavating an archeological field dig, curating it, and creating black and white pen illustrations.
  • Sharpening observational techniques for better field sketching using a variety of media.
  • Depicting iridescence and transparency in plants using traditional color media.
  • Preparing illustrations in traditional media then manipulating scans of them with a computer
