DAY ONE (March 27, 2009)
Each participant will be asked to bring at least one of their own existing, completed, non-digital artwork and/or bring a scan of it on removable media (thumbdrive, CD, or DVD). Participants will gain a fundamental understanding of the Photoshop’s interface, become familiar with the various ‘palettes’, and learning how to digitally enhance and change their artwork in Photoshop through a variety of techniques. Participants will learn the concept of ‘layers’ and experiment with a multitude of image manipulation options using blending modes, filters, effects, and other editing tools.

DAY TWO (March 28, 2009)
Participants will be introduced to methods of creating and building an original illustration on the computer using a simple sketch. We will focus on creating accurate and efficient ‘paths’ in Illustrator, which will later be used in Photoshop on Day 3 as ‘stencils’ to build a full-color illustration. Participants will work in pairs. Each participant will receive a CD with a sketch to work from, as well as a technique guide. The end of the session may be devoted to importing or placing all of the Illustrator paths into Photoshop.

DAY THREE (March 29, 2009)
Participants will spend the day using Photoshop. Participants will learn how to turn paths on and off, separate paths into separate selections, and use them as stencils to paint a full-color illustration. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of layers, and the differences and advantages between using layers and paths. Basic file setup using a background, sketch layer and color layers will be covered. Photoshop tools (such as burn, dodge, special brushes, gradients and fills, cloning) and filters/effects (such as Gaussian blur, noise, texturing and fading) will be covered. Specific techniques to add shadows and highlights will also be covered. Other topics pertinent to Photoshop will be touched on such as the use of masks, line variation, embedding images, complex file setup, and common pitfalls and shortcuts.

DAY FOUR (March 30, 2009)
We will present variety of techniques in Illustrator and Photoshop, building on the previous days’ material, including digital watercolor wash in Photoshop, calligraphic line technique in Illustrator, a technique for creating compound eyes, and creating custom brushes in Illustrator and Photoshop. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment!
