2009 GNSI Educational Series

What to bring, what to wear
For the first day of the workshop, it is necessary to bring at least one of your own existing, completed, non-digital artwork and/or bring a scan of it on removable media (thumbdrive, CD, or DVD).

A camera and sketching supplies for use during breaks are recommended. (The surrounding Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History will inspire you to doodle during breaks!) We will provide lunches, snacks, and water (included in workshop registration fee).

Bring comfortable, casual clothing to wear for the workshop, perhaps a sweater in case you get cold in the lab. Bring comfortable walking shoes for taking a stroll on the National Mall or other city tour excursions. It is generally in the mid- to upper-70s during the day in late spring, and still cool at night. Layers are your best choice, with the top layer being light and wind/water resistant. Make sure to also pack an umbrella and/or rain gear, in case!

Possible side trips, excursions, and other activities

The weather in Washington, DC should be beautiful, the workshop dates are planned at the onset of cherry blossoms in DC, weather permitting we will walk to the tidal basin to enjoy the scenery the blossoms produce. (Click here for more information on the National Cherry Blossom Festival).

Other outside class activities might include the Smithsonian Institution’s other museums, such as the National Gallery of Art, The National Air and Space Museum, the Hirschhorn, Sackler and Freer Galleries, and the newest National Museum of the American Indian — just a few museums which are neighbors to the National Museum of Natural History. (See www.si.edu for more information on the Smithsonian Institution).

We’ll also take an excursion to old town Alexandria for at least one evening of dinner together.
