GNSI Journal Submission Requirements

SUBMITTING ARTICLES

The GNSI publications team seeks in-depth articles relating to aspects of natural science illustration. Articles should be of an appropriate length to adequately cover the chosen subject; our preferred length is approximately 1,200–3,200 words. Authors do not have to be members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and the person submitting the article does not have to be the author, but must be able to provide written permission from the author for the publication of the article, as well as written permission for all copyrighted images when copyright is not in the artist’s or author’s name.

All images of individuals require written permission from the person/s depicted for the use of any identifiable image, or from parents if the subject is underage. These permissions notices must be submitted to the GNSI editor before images may be used. Contact the Editor for permission forms.

Preferably, articles should be submitted via email after initial advance contact is made with the GNSI Journal editor, and images, if too large to easily be sent by email, can be burned to a CD and sent to the Editor or uploaded to a special website. The article’s text may be included on the CD if desired.

Text files may be either Macintosh or PC-compatible Microsoft Word document files, or Rich Text Format (.RTF) files from other word-processing programs. We cannot accept Word Perfect files, unless you convert them to text (.txt) or .rtf files. Feel free to contact the editor with any questions.

Time sensitive material should be submitted for publication in the GNSI website.

Image Requirements

Illustrations in any medium should accompany articles. Preliminary submissions can be high-quality digital files or prints if necessary. Final illustrations should be submitted as follows:
High-quality, high-resolution scans (350 dpi or at a width of not less than 1500 pixels); or high-quality photographs (slides or prints). Image sizes will be discussed at the time of acceptance of the illustration or article. Submission of original art work is discouraged. Legends should not be attached to the illustration, but included at the end of the body of the article. Articles are initially reviewed by the editorial board, and, if accepted, they are subject to editing with the author’s final approval.

ARTICLE specifications

1. An Abstract of 100 words or less which summarizes the article must be included.

2. The body text can have appropriate heads, subheads, charts and/or graphs. References within the text should be cited in the following format: (Doe, 1999). Superscripted or subscripted footnotes or endnotes should not be used. Cited references should be listed at the end of the article, as follows:
