"The Illustrated Moth: Natural Science Through Watercolors" is a weekend enrichment program for those interested in the natural science or illustration of butterflies and moths. Planned by The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators-Great Plains Chapter, the exhibit, lecture and butterfly wing tour allows non-artists of all ages to gain exposure to natural science and illustration. The in-depth watercolor workshop will give new and seasoned artists the chance to learn and develop techniques.

Dr. Cody will lecture and give a slide presentation on traveling the world to photograph and to paint the Saturnid Moths.
An exhibit of his paintings will be on display in the Exhibit Hall at Reiman Gardens.

Dr. Cody’s workshop will be held at the Hunziker House.
This workshop is designed to help participants improve as watercolorists. Special patterning techniques through use of salt and plastic wrap will be demonstrated. John will also discuss ways of achieving soft edges and eliminating patchiness in paintings, and he will demonstrate ways of making corrections.

Tour or Entomology Lab and Butterfly Wing:
Nathan Brockman, the curator of the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing,
will present a behind-the-scenes tour of the entomology lab,
including the emergence cages and the 2,500 square foot butterfly
"wing" that allows guests to walk among over 800 butterflies in flight.
Brockman will review the procedures of rearing and releasing butterflies. He will describe Reiman Gardens’ special study projects to support the conservation
of Iowa native butterfly species and to make the glass houses sustainable.
He will also explain how the butterfly wings are used by artists.
