Preparing for a Career in Science Illustration

From an email:

I have just started to look into schooling or jobs regarding science illustrations.  I studied art all my life, and received a bachelors in Anthropology at Reed College.  If you have any suggestions or information that can help me start out, I'd appreciate it.

It sounds like you have a good background for an interest in Science Illustration.

- I would recommend you read the contents of the GNSI Forum. It answers a number of questions about Education and beginning a Career.

These are good treads:

- Review the Fourm threads at http://www.gnsi.org/forum/general-discussion

- Join the Sci-art Listserve. http://www.gnsi.org/resources/reviews/gnsi-sciart-l-listserv
It is an email discussion group that gets 10-20 comments a day with lots of good information from illustrators all over the world. If you have a question, ask , and it will get an answer.

- Here is a list of Schools that have some Science art Curriculum

- If you are interested in more education, you might consider the a Certificate program for a year of immersion in the Science Illustration process.

-If you are interested in Medical Illustration, there are 5-6 institutions with accreditation.

-The main need is to be able to draw accurately and love to communicate information and ideas. You Science background is a good thing to help you discern real information and your art background helps you understand how to present it.

-To be a working artist these days means you need the drawing background as well as Computer art skills to get the work done and out for publication.

I hope that helps you in your quest.
