PRESENTATION: Color! Shape! Pattern! A Children’s Book Author/Illustrator Reveals Her Process

Susan Stockdale is the author and illustrator of five picture books that celebrate nature with grace and charm. Her titles include Bring On the Birds and Fabulous Fishes. During this presentation, Susan will demonstrate how she researches, writes, and illustrates her nature books for young children. She will cover her processes involving rigorous fact checking with experts, manuscript revisions, storyboards, and sketch revisions. Learn how this former textile designer ensures the factual accuracy of her subjects while finding pattern and whimsy in both her text and imagery. Discover how she encourages children to celebrate animal life in this lively behind-the-scenes look at the picture bookmaking process.

Susan Stockdale's books have won awards from the National Science Teachers Association, Parents’ Choice, and Bank Street College of Education. Her most recent book, Bring On the Birds, was selected as a 2012 American Library Association Notable Children's Book in the Informational Picture Books category. Her engaging rhymes and vibrant illustrations elicit praise. The Washington Post exclaimed, “If the paintings are the feast, Stockdale’s words are the dessert.”

Susan currently lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where she is working on a book about striped animals for publication in 2013. Visit her website at www.susanstockdale.com.
