Medicinal Plants in the Southern Hemisphere of South Africa

As new member of the GNSI, I was excited to travel to South Africa and found myself amazed by the wonders not only of The Cape Floristic Region, but also by the beauty of the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden.

Former GNSI member Graham Johnson has been focusing on molecular illustration tools the past few years. He has an illustration/animation challenge that is part of the rolling out of these new tools. The Contest is that is closing Monday. But if you have nothing to do this weekend and would like to enter some of the categories read on. This works with the major 3D packages as well as the free Blender, and a few more obscure packages:

The Illustrators Club of Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia (IC for short) has issues their annual Exhibit Call. The show is open to all illustrators in the Mid-Atlantic region. If you would like to show your art to a wider audience this might be the opportunity for you. The group is well award of science and nature illustration. They even have a science/medical illustrator on the judging panel.

The GNSI Great Lakes Chapter invites all GNSI members residing in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan to join their exhibit at the Fernwood Botanical Garden in Niles, Michigan. The title of the exhibit is Great Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Scientific Illustrators Exhibit: Spring Botanicals.

The Denver Botanic Gardens and the GNSI are pleased to announce a premier juried exhibition opportunity for GNSI members only, highlighting the subject matter of plants, birds, and pollinators. Subjects may include plants only or animals only (birds, mammals, insects, reptiles & amphibians, etc), but judging weight will be given to images that emphasize plants and their relationships with their pollinators.

Original art only (includes prints of digital works) in 2- or 3-dimensions. Jurying emphasis will be on both artistic excellence and scientific accuracy.

The website Science Art-Nature has posted a Call For Entries for a virtual art exhibit entitled Window On Evolution: An Artistic Celebration of Charles Darwin, commemorating Darwin Day, February 12, 2013. Each selected piece of art must portray a narrative about evolution. Visit the Science Art-Nature website for the entry form and detailed information.

A $15 donation will cover processing the first entry, and $5 is needed for each additional entry. Save 30% ($5) on your first entry by confirming your intention to submit your form, jpg, and donation by October 1st.

AWARDS: The jury will determine the Grand Prize award of $800; the first place award of $300 and the second place award of $150.

An all media exhibit on artistic interpretations of pollination including flowering plants, pollinators, and
the lively environment they intersect. Related topics can include seeds, flower anatomy, pollen grains,
chemistry, genetics, and other areas that relate to the pollination process. Pollen vectors (pollinators) can
include native bees such as orchard mason bees, miner bees, and bumblebees, beetles, flies (syrphid
